Beery's Guide to Completing Missions

NOTE.
All revisions in this color (yellow) and italics contributed by Cpt. J. Hazelwood. "Beery" did the heavy lifting by putting together this guide in the first place. The revisions simply point out a few additional things that might not be obvious to everyone.

Since many people (including myself) have been having problems completing missions I figured I'd post a guide.

Guard.

You're required to go to the objective location and pick up pilots who parachute into the sea. You get 250 renown points if you pick up 5 pilots. Survivors appear as ship icons in the mission editor and are reported as ships by the crew. Survivors will drown if you do not rescue them soon enough. Survivors can be very difficult to spot in the open sea so check the subsim forums for tips on how to locate them. Once you are close, go to the bridge by selecting the binocular icon and then the binocular (NOT the TBT) icon on the bridge toolbar (you must be surfaced, of course). You should find yourself standing on the bridge enjoying a "naked eyeball" view. Now roll the mouse/trackball wheel forward to zoom. Instead of the plain view from the bridge you will now snap to the binocular view. As soon as a survivor is centered in the binocular field of view the crosshair will change to red. While it is red, click the lifebuoy icon on the toolbar (it will now be yellow rather than grayed out). You may have to click more than once as it is very easy for a a survivor to drop out of view in the swells. Your report for this objective will show "completed" once you have picked up the required number of survivors. Icons for survivors will disappear as you gather them up. A well-documented mission should inform you how many survivors you must pick up for the objective requirements to be satisfied.

Insertion Commando/Spy/Supplies are essentially identical objectives in regard to how you satisfy requirements.

Insertion Commando.
You have to go to the objective location and drop off a team of six commandos. The radius of this mission is usually 3 nautical miles. This is determined by the mission designer. You have to surface the boat once within this radius and bring the boat to a stop in order to be able to launch the commandos' dinghy. An inconsistency in the simulation design is that the option to launch is presented in a pop-up menu rather than a button on the toolbar so don't bother looking for the latter. When you are "in the zone" be assured you will get the menu. Once the dinghy is launched the objective is completed. The option to launch the dinghy will not appear unless you surface, so you can either enter the area submerged or do a quick dive and resurface once at the objective. You usually get 200 renown points for completing this mission.

Insertion Spy.
You have to go to the objective location and drop off a spy. The radius of this mission is usually 3 nautical miles. You have to surface the boat once within this radius and bring the boat to a stop in order to be able to launch the spy's dinghy. Once the dinghy is launched the objective is completed. The option to launch the dinghy will not appear unless you surface, so you can either enter the area submerged or do a quick dive and resurface once at the objective. You usually get 200 renown points for completing this mission.

Insertion Supplies.
You have to go to the objective location and drop off a dinghy containing two sailors and supplies. The radius of this mission is usually 3 nautical miles. You have to surface the boat once within this radius and bring the boat to a stop in order to be able to launch the dinghy. Once the dinghy is launched the objective is completed. The option to launch the dinghy will not appear unless you surface, so you can either enter the area submerged or do a quick dive and resurface once at the objective. You usually get 200 renown points for completing this mission.

Patrol.
This mission requires only that you stay within 100 nautical miles of the objective for 48 hours. You usually get 200 renown points for completing this mission.

Photo.
You must travel until you are inside the map zone defining the photo objective. In a well-documented mission there should be a waypoint specified that puts you within range. While submerged, lock an enemy vessel in your periscope and press the toolbar button with the camera icon to take a photo. You may need a number of photos to complete the mission. You usually get 300 renown points for this mission. Not sure what the photo value number in the mission file means but when designing my own missions I make this equal to the photo minimum or otherwise a "mission completed" indication cannot be obtained.

Sink.
Here you must travel to within 100 nautical miles of the objective. Once on station a second objective will appear telling you to sink enemy shipping. You are free to go anywhere to sink ships. You get 100 renown points for arriving on station and a further 250 points if you sink 10,000 tons or more.

I'll update the guide as I get more information. Please post to subsim forum if you have more info.
